This presentation analyses failure mechanisms in high-voltage (HV) generators, focusing on partial discharge (PD) and advanced repair techniques. It outlines how electrical, thermal, mechanical, and environmental stresses contribute to insulation degradation in rotating machines. PD is defined as a localized dielectric breakdown within mica-resin insulation systems, typically occurring above 4kV, and is a key indicator of insulation ageing. Major PD forms—slot discharge, overhang tracking, and internal discharge—are linked to defects such as contamination, voids, and poor winding support. Case studies demonstrate PD measurement, root cause diagnostics, and in-situ refurbishment methods, achieving significant reduction in discharge magnitude and restoring dielectric integrity, reliability, and service life.
专家简介:
Dr Yali Feng began her career in 1992 as an electrical engineer in China, specialising in induction machine design. She later joined Dalian Brook Crompton Ltd. and moved to the UK in 2002 to pursue a PhD at the University of Manchester on slottin harmonic analysis. After contributing to teaching and research in superconducting electrical machines, she joined Sulzer in 2010 and is now Chief Electrical Engineer. Recognised as an electro-mechanical specialist, chairing Sulzer’s Expert Community. She is also a panellist on T&E (Technology and Engineering) panels, on sustainable electrification and future young engineer initiatives in CWIEME, and was awarded CWIEME Engineer of the Year 2026.
