Abstract:
This lecture introduces the overall procedure of designing the handling system in container terminals. A simple example for the capacity planning for a container handling system is illustrated. It is discussed how statistical methods may be used for the estimation of handling capacity of yard cranes. It is shown an optimization model may be established for determining the optimal configuration of a yard block and a layout of storage yard. It is also discussed how the expected number of rehandles may be estimated, which has a significant impact on the design of a storage yard.

Kap Hwan Kim教授是原国釜山国立大学工业工程系教授,现为浙江大学海洋学院特聘教授。主要从事集装箱港口设计、运作与计划优化,以及物流管理等领域的研究。多年来,他在国际与韩国国内权威杂志上发表了大量关于集装箱港口物流的论文,并完成多项港口研究项目,在该领域具有重要影响。
Kap Hwan Kim is working at Ocean College of Zhejiang University. Before joining to Zhejiang University, he had worked at the Department of Industrial Engineering of Pusan National University. He studied at the Seoul National University (Bachelor) and the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (Master, Ph.D.). He was a visiting scholar at Purdue University, University of Montreal, and Shanghai Maritime University. He was the director of the Institute of Logistics Innovation and Networking at Pusan National University and the president of the Korean Institute of Industrial Engineers. He is a fellow of the Korean Academy of Science and Technology. His research is focused on the design and operational problems of container terminals. He published many papers at international journals such as OR Spectrum, Flexible Services and Manufacturing Journal, Transportation Science, Transportation Research B, Transportation Research E, European journal of Operational Research, and so on.
